Title: Stop Drinking Water from a Fire Hose: Utilizing Simple Technologies to Improve Experiential Learning

   

For some students, the rotation you precept may be the student’s first experience in that practice venue. In addition to learning where to park, where the restrooms are, and how the institution is laid out, students also have to learn pharmacy “stuff”. This can be overwhelming for a student, and negatively impact their learning. The use of simple, easily available technologies or processes may assist the student in getting up-to-speed in a more enjoyable, effective manner. The utilization of rotation pre-assessments and quizzes, platforms such as Dropbox, and planned sessions revolving around case-based games help the student gain experience, confidence, and competence.  This presentation will provide recommendations and suggestions in providing a more fulfilling experience through the use of technology, resulting in increased performance and enjoyment for both preceptor and student.

1. Describe 3 logistical issues that pharmacy students struggle with while on clinical rotations
2. List 3 free technologies available for preceptors to place useful information for students to access
3. Describe the utility of using games or polling systems to improve information retention
