Navigating the Beers Criteria: Balancing Medication Safety and Efficacy in the Geriatric Patient

Management of the geriatric patient, regardless of the setting, continually challenges skilled clinicians as they must balance both safety and efficacy. The 2015 Updated American Geriatrics Society (AGS) Beers Criteria seeks to provide a resource for patients, clinicians, and payers. This one hour program will equip pharmacists with the expertise needed to evaluate medication regimens and recommend alternatives in this unique but growing population.

Presenter:

Kimberly E. Grant, PharmD

Dr. Grant is a 2015 graduate of the Duquesne Mylan School of Pharmacy in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with a concentration in geriatric pharmacotherapy. She completed a PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency with Duquesne University and St. Barnabas Health System with a focus on geriatric care in the long-term care setting. This past year she completed her PGY-2 Geriatrics Pharmacy Residency with Duquesne, which focused on the geriatric population in long-term care, assisted living, and independent living. Her research focuses have included pharmacist involvement in transitions to discharge in the skilled nursing facility and achievement of appropriate blood pressure control in the elderly. She is now working in managed care as a Drug Education Coordinator with a focus on high risk medications.
