Proton-Pump Inhibitors: Navigating the Jungle of Risks and Benefits
There has been an increased volume of alerts regarding the risks associated with use of proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs). This program will provide guidance on balancing the risks and benefits associated with chronic PPI therapy. It will also offer tools to evaluate the appropriateness of PPI therapy. Patient cases will be utilized to demonstrate the concepts and aid in the application of said concepts to future patients.

Chelsea Bombatch, PharmD, BCPS, Clinical Pharmacist Educator at RxPrep
Dr. Chelsea Bombatch is a board certified clinical pharmacist educator with RxPrep. In this role, she develops review materials for students preparing for their NAPLEX exam and travels to schools of pharmacy to teach live review courses. Prior to working at RxPrep, she was a clinical pharmacist with the Washington Health System. She completed a PGY1 residency at UPMC Presbyterian followed by a PGY2 residency in ambulatory care at the Cleveland Clinic. She has authored and contributed to a number of scholarly publications regarding a wide variety of topics, including herpes zoster vaccine in patients with HIV, pediatric asthma and cystic fibrosis, and Prader-Willi syndrome.

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to
1. Discuss indications, pharmacokinetics, and adverse effects of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs)
2. Recognize potential risks of chronic treatment with PPIs
3. Evaluate the appropriateness of PPI therapy in a patient scenario
