Overdose vs. Patients: The Dawn of Naloxone

Pennsylvania is in the midst of an opioid epidemic.  Ten Pennsylvanians die every day due to an opioid/heroin overdose.  With figures for 2016 expected to be worse than 2015, the state is turning to health care providers for help.  As pharmacy providers, we are equipped with the opportunity to dispense the lifesaving medication naloxone.  This program will provide an overview of the current state of the opioid epidemic in Pennsylvania and provide you with the tools needed to properly respond to an overdose scene and to provide top level patient education on the topic.

Thomas Franko, PharmD, BCACP, Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice Wilkes University Nesbitt School of Pharmacy

Dr. Franko graduated in 2011 from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy.  He completed a PGY-1 residency focused in primary care at the VA Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre, PA.  After residency he developed the first pharmacist run outpatient medication therapy management clinic focusing on chronic non-malignant pain on the east coast at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA.  Currently, he is an assistant professor of pharmacy practice at Wilkes University and maintains clinical practice at the Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education in Clarks Summit, PA.
