Academy
of Student Pharmacists

ARTICLE I
Purpose
The purpose of the Academy of Student
Pharmacists is to promote, encourage, and
represent student membership in the Pennsylvania
Pharmacists Association (PPA) by developing
programs of interest and concern to pharmacy
students.
ARTICLE II
Membership
All
students enrolled in the professional curriculum
of an accredited college of pharmacy who have
paid the dues established by the Executive
Council of the Pennsylvania Pharmacists
Association (PPA) shall be considered members of
the Academy of Student Pharmacists. They shall
be eligible for all benefits of student
membership in the PPA, as determined by the
Executive Council.
Deans, faculty, and
administrative personnel from the Colleges of
Pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania who
are PPA members may be considered Associate
members and receive pertinent information.
ARTICLE III
Organizational Structure
A. The Academy of Student Pharmacists
shall be operated through a Student Advisory
Board which shall consist of:
1. The three elected officers of the
Academy and
2. Each accredited
college of pharmacy in the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania will be entitled to one
representative on the Advisory Board of the
Academy.
B. The dean
of each accredited college of pharmacy in the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, or his
representative, shall be invited to attend
meetings or portions of meetings as a non-voting
representative of the Advisory Board.
C. The
Executive Director of PPA or his/her staff
representative shall attend meetings of the
Advisory Board as a non-voting representative.
ARTICLE IV
Committees
The
Chair of the Academy of Student Pharmacists with
the approval of the Advisory Board may appoint
additional committees as the need arises.
ARTICLE V
Duties of
Advisory Board Members
A. The student representatives of the
Advisory Board shall work with the PPA office to
disseminate information relative to the
Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association and the
Academy of Student Pharmacists to their fellow
classmates. They shall be responsible for
organizing and conducting membership drives,
legislative involvement, and professional
activities.
B. The
deans and faculty members of the colleges of
pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
shall be encouraged to assist student
representatives and student members in all
activities and for promoting membership in the
Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association to their
respective students.
ARTICLE VI
Relationship with the American Pharmacists
Association – Academy of Student Pharmacists
(APhA-ASP) and other Pharmacy Organizations
The
student representatives of the Academy of
Student Pharmacists shall work closely with the
officers of the APhA-ASP on the chapter,
regional, and national levels to develop
professional activities and encourage membership
in both organizations. The Academy
representatives shall utilize their resources
and contacts in order to provide the most
meaningful benefits to students and to the
general public.
The Academy shall
also work closely and in the same manner with
any other campus student organizations as
feasible. This shall include but not be limited
to: the National Community Pharmacists
Association (NCPA), Association of Managed Care
Pharmacists
(AMCP), American Society of Health-System
Pharmacists (ASHP), and pharmacy fraternities.
ARTICLE VII
Election
of Student Representatives to the Advisory Board
A. The student representative from each
accredited college of pharmacy in the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania shall be a PPA
member and selected in such manner as the
college may determine.
B. Once
selected, a student representative shall serve
for one calendar year or until his/her
replacement is selected.
C. In the
event a vacancy should occur due to resignation
or academic reasons, a new representative shall
be selected by the college as soon as feasible.
ARTICLE VIII
Officers
and their Terms and Duties
A. The Officers of the Academy shall be a
Chair, Vice Chair, and Secretary, who shall be
elected from the student membership at the Mid
Year PPA meeting and shall serve terms of one
year commencing from their election through to
the following year’s meeting.
B. The
Chair shall be responsible for:
1. Working
with PPA to coordinate the activities of student
representatives at each college of pharmacy.
2. Attending meetings of the
Executive Council of PPA as a voting member, and
alerting the Vice Chair if unable to attend.
3.
Appointing student delegates and alternates to
the PPA House of Delegates in the event of
absence of the selected representatives from any
college.
4. Presiding
at meetings of the Advisory Board and the
Academy as a whole.
5. Working
with the student program coordinators and staff
to plan the student program track held in
conjunction with PPA meetings.
6. Other
appropriate functions related to the success of
the Academy.
C. The Vice
Chair shall be responsible for:
1.
Assisting the chair
in his/her duties and in the chair’s absence
fulfilling those duties.
D.
The
Secretary shall be responsible for:
1.
Recording minutes
of the Advisory Board and Academy meetings and
providing those to the PPA office.
2.
Assisting the chair
and vice chair in his/her duties and in their
absence fulfilling those duties.
ARTICLE IX
Meetings
The
Advisory Board Committee shall meet at least
annually at a PPA meeting and at any other time
if determined necessary by the Chair.
The Academy shall
meet as a whole at least annually at a PPA
meeting.
ARTICLE X
Quorum
A. A quorum at a meeting of the members
of the Academy shall consist of eight (8)
members having voting rights or one
representative from each college of pharmacy in
the Commonwealth.
B. A quorum
of a meeting of the Advisory Board shall consist
of five (5) members. However, the Advisory
Board may meet and make recommendations without
a quorum being present.
ARTICLE XI
Rules of
Order
All
points of order and parliamentary procedure
shall be governed by Robert’s Rules of Order,
revised.
ARTICLE XI
Amendments
A.
Any proposition to
amend these by-laws shall be provided to all
members of the Academy at least thirty (30)days
in advance of the Academy meeting upon which the
matter shall be debated. The proposed amendment
shall be read and voted on at that meeting
provided a quorum is present.
B. Upon
receiving an affirmative vote of the majority,
the amendment(s) shall then be submitted to the
Executive Council of PPA where, upon receiving
an affirmative vote shall become part of the
Academy by-laws.
