PPA Announces Support for Governor’s Emergency Declaration

HARRISBURG, PA – The Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association (PPA) supports Governor Tom Wolf’s recent decision to declare Pennsylvania's heroin and opioid addiction crisis a statewide emergency. The devastating nature of this epidemic makes such action necessary as overdose related deaths continue to mount within our Commonwealth.

From our communications with the Governor’s Office, this declaration will establish a new opioid command center staffed by representatives from Pennsylvania’s health, emergency, and law enforcement agencies to better coordinate treatment and prevention efforts. The command center will work toward advancing planned directives that include allowing emergency medical personnel to leave behind Naloxone, expanding access to the Pennsylvania’s drug monitoring system, adding overdose to reportable conditions, and allowing pharmacists to partner with prisons and treatment facilities to provide Naloxone.

The magnitude of the current opioid crisis is deeply troubling to our organization and pharmacists throughout Pennsylvania, whose primary concern is with improving patient health. PPA will continue to do what it can to monitor and support when able these and other efforts to combat the current epidemic.
