Students attending the conference will be able to participate in several hours of student programming each day, as well as sit in on any continuing education programs, meetings, forums, and other events included in the conference schedule.

PPA plans a variety of programs designed with students in mind.

Be a Lion in the Jungle: Capturing your Audience during Poster Presentations

Julie Olenak, PharmD, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and Associate Professor, Wilkes UniversityThis program will provide information for students who are ready to develop their research projects into posters. We will discuss tips for turning your research into a captivating poster and effectively delivering a presentation during a poster symposium.

Stories of Opioid Addicts and Their Difficulties Exploring the Healthcare Jungle

Daniel Ventricelli, PharmD, MPH, Assistant Professor of Clinical Pharmacy, Philadelphia College of Pharmacy University of the Sciences.

Students will learn about three different individuals and their struggle with opioid addiction. This presentation will explore the stigma these patients encounter when trying to obtain adequate healthcare and will provide students with an opportunity to discuss the ethical dilemmas surrounding this disease.

Join five new practitioners in a conversational program that provides you with the opportunity to ask the panel of new practitioner’s questions regarding their experience transitioning from a student pharmacist to a pharmacist.

Exploring Interviewing:  How to Set Yourself Apart in the  Pharmacist Interview Process

Independent Pharmacy Ownership Residency Program (IPOR) Fast Facts

Elizabeth Harris, PharmD, BCACP, Assistant Professor of Clinical Pharmacy Philadelphia College of Pharmacy University of the Sciences

This presentation is designed to inform student pharmacists of the IPOR program developed by the UNC Eschelman School of Pharmacy in collaboration with the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy at USciences.  IPOR prepares graduates to be entrepreneurs and pharmacy owners in an evolving healthcare market.  Residents will obtain the skills, confidence, and experience to create viable business models for community pharmacy in the future.

Achieving Independence Competition

Achieving Independence is student competition designed to foster the budding entrepreneurial spirit among pharmacy students to one day own their own pharmacy!  The program was developed in 2009 as a way to encourage creativity and interest in pharmacy ownership.  The University of Pittsburgh won this competition in 2016 - which team will take home the traveling plaque this year?

1:30 to 2:30 PM

Ready to Traverse through the Residency Showcase Jungle? Come visit the Mock Residency Showcase to learn how to survive!

Vicky Shah, PharmD, BCPS and Thomas Franko, PharmD, BCACP, Assistant Professors of Pharmacy Practice, Wilkes University
The Mock Residency Showcase will help students prepare for the PPA Residency Showcase as well as the ASHP MidYear Residency Showcase. Presenters will offer a mock showcase and answer the questions: How do you introduce yourself? What questions should you ask? Should you offer a CV? and How do you start a conversation with someone who has a lot of people around them? Presenters will also discuss the elevator speech: how to sell yourself in 30 seconds and what is the most important information you should tell someone to catch their attention. Please bring any items you think you may bring with you to the real showcase (backpack, messenger bag, CVs, portfolios, water bottles, etc). This way, you can feel the real experience and practice appropriately.

 

2:30 to 5:00 PM

Residency Showcase

PPA's Residency Showcase is an opportunity for students to meet with representatives from residency programs from across Pennsylvania and nearby states. Last year's Residency Showcase had over 70 programs represented and more than 150 students in attendance!

The Residency Showcase is open to all pharmacy students. Showcase registration is included in conference registration packages. Those not attending the rest of the Annual Conference can register for only the showcase. Registration is free for PPA members and $20 for non-members.
