Precepting During Your Rookie Year: A Guide for New Practitioners


Becoming a preceptor can be an overwhelming prospect for any pharmacist, even more so for a new practitioner. This module will present practical strategies that can be utilized to create a home run experiential rotation for rookie preceptors and their students. Join us for a discussion about planning and implementing your winning game plan.

Danielle Mayer is a newly appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at Jefferson College of Pharmacy in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Danielle Mayer completed her Doctor of Pharmacy degree at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy in 2015. She then completed a community pharmacy residency with Acme Sav-On Pharmacy and Temple University from 2015-2016. Her current practice site is an outpatient pharmacy that serves Jefferson employees and patients of Jefferson physicians in Philadelphia, PA.

  Andrea Joseph is the Assistant Director of Experiential Education in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the Jefferson College of Pharmacy (JCP). A member of the JCP founding faculty, she first served as a Field Coordinator for Experiential Education and then progressed to her current Assistant Director role. Her primary responsibilities include course coordination of six Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences for first, second and third year pharmacy students. A graduate of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, she recently earned a master’s degree in Organizational Development and Leadership from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She has worked in experiential education for the past 25 years and has offered numerous preceptor training and development presentations.


Target Audience: Pharmacists

CE Credit: 1 Contact Hour (0.1 CEU)

Program Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to
" 1. Describe a framework to guide in the preparation and planning for an optimal on-site learning experience 2. Discuss strategies to clearly define expectations of the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values a student must demonstrate throughout their experiential rotation. 3. Incorporate various techniques reviewed to effectively provide routine feedback to students. "
