The Pharmacist’s Role in Promoting Patient Safety in the Treatment of Diabetes

 

Insulin has been associated with more medication errors than any other drug class and hospitalization rates for hypoglycemia now exceed those for hyperglycemia. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in are on the front lines of the battle to improve medication safety among patients treated for diabetes. This program will use a case based approach to make participants aware of medication errors and patient safety issues that arise in the treatment of diabetes. Participants will explore strategies to identify and prevent errors related to insulin and other diabetes agents.

1. Describe the impact of medication errors and unsafe medication use encountered in the treatment of diabetes.

2. Identify examples of medication errors and patient safety problems that arise with the use of insulin and oral diabetes treatments.

3. Apply strategies utilized in the practice of pharmacy to prevent patient harm related to the treatment of diabetes.
