The Art of War: Strategies to Control Pain in the Older Adult


The goal of this session will be to review different types of pain, including musculoskeletal, neuropathic, and malignant pain.  The speakers will discuss typical clinical presentation as well as special treatment considerations for the older adult. Case presentations and audience participation will be utilized to facilitate learning


Maria Foy PharmD, BCPS, CPE

Maria Foy, PharmD, BCPS, CPE is a clinical pharmacy specialist in Palliative Care at Abington Hospital Jefferson Health, a 660 bed community teaching hospital 15 miles outside of Philadelphia. Maria graduated from Temple University with a BS in Pharmacy and received a non-traditional doctor of pharmacy degree from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. Maria became certified in pain management and education through the American Society of Pain Educators earning the title of Certified Pain Educator (CPE). Maria is also board certified in pharmacotherapy (BCPS). In 2017, Maria received a Safety Award at Abington Jefferson Health for her work to develop safe opioid prescribing practices and received the Joe E. Smith Award from the Pennsylvania Society of Health System Pharmacy, the states’ recognition for excellence in clinical practice

Program Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

Identify different types of pain and their typical presentation in an older adult.
Explain the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic considerations important for agent selection in the older adult.When presented a case, choose appropriate pharmacologic therapies for pain management in the older adult
