Basic Spanish for the Pharmacy


Patients with limited English proficiency experience inferior care and can often misunderstand medical information due to language barriers. The purpose of this presentation is to provide an overview of the Hispanic culture and the basics of the Spanish language for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians communicating with Spanish-speaking patients. 


Livia McCutcheon, PharmD, MA, Adjunct Professor Wilkes University

Dr. Livia McCutcheon is an ambulatory care clinical pharmacist at Star Wellness Family Practice in Bethlehem, PA, which is associated with St. Luke’s Family Medicine Residency. Additionally, she is an Adjunct Professor at Wilkes University, Nesbitt School of Pharmacy where she has experience teaching En la clinica de los drogadictos in the Spanish course. She earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Nova Southeastern University. Dr. McCutcheon completed her pharmacy practice residency at University of Mississippi Medical Center and an Instructional Design and Evaluation Fellowship at University of Maryland where she taught Cultural Competence & Medical Spanish course. She later earned a Masters of Arts in Instructional Systems Development from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Eileen Friery, PharmD, PGY2 Critical Care Resident, Ohio State University


Dr. Eileen Friery graduated with her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Wilkes University Class of 2019 and went on to do her PGY1 residency at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, TN. She is now a PGY2 resident at the Ohio State University in Columbus, OH where she is specializing in Critical Care.


Paola Bianco, PhD, Professor, Wilkes University


Dr. Paola Bianco has earned a bachelor of arts in French and received a master’s degree in Italian and French from State University of New York at Binghamton. She earned her doctorate in Romance Languages, specializing in Spanish and Italian, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.Dr. Bianco has published numerous articles concerning Latin American and Italian cultures and literatures. She has authored several books in Italian and Hispanic language and literatures among these “Tra ermetismo e socialismo”, published in Italy about Sicilian poetry,Critical Analysis of Spanish texts, Introduction to Latin American Literature, “Conversando con Literatura”, and her last book an anthology of Women Literature including feminist writers from the 16th century until today. Presently, she is working together with Dr. McCutcheon in a medical Spanish conversations textbook. She is professor in the Spanish program at Wilkes University and serves as the coordinator for the Summer in Spain and the total immersion program in Cusco, Peru.

1. Discuss the hispanic cultural influences on patient care
2. Recognize the pronunciation of vowels and consonants in Spanish
3. Apply Spanish basics to patient encounters given case scenarios
