The Lehigh Valley Pain Management Alliance Experience

Despite the development and availability of a multitude of dosage forms and drug delivery systems for analgesic products, effectively managed chronic pain (both malignant as well as non-malignant) continues to be an unmet medical need in the United States. We have seen an increased number of specialty practices devoted to pain management open in the greater Lehigh Valley and nationwide over the past twenty years. Sadly, along with legitimate pain management practices are those offices that prescribe narcotic analgesics and controlled adjunct medications for purely financial gains - creating a network of illicit distribution of narcotics and dangerous drugs under the guise of an established medical practice. The pharmacist is the one professional that invariably must determine which patients are authentic pain management patients and which are trafficking prescribed controlled substances. With recent investigations in Florida resulting in an $80 million fine levied against a major pharmacy chain for encouraging the processing of any and all narcotic prescriptions, it is evident that pharmacies that fill these illicit prescriptions face the same penalties that are faced by prescribers. This presentation highlights the establishment of a community pharmacy-based pain management service -The Lehigh Valley Pain Management Alliance - a collaborative effort between the pain management practices of the region and the member pharmacies of the alliance. This relationship will assure that bona fide pain management patients will have a pharmacy dedicated to their treatment, that these medical practices will have a partner in the care of their patients, and that illicit distribution of dangerous drugs through mainstream medical channels will be eliminated by enhanced patient selection.
