My Hospital Pharmacy Experience

By Erin Fegley

Erin Fegley

2018 PharmD Candidate

Philadelphia College of Pharmacy

Rotation Location:

Blue Mountain Health System Hospital Rotation (Lehighton, PA)

Rotation Preceptor:

Elissa Remmel, PharmD

Rotation Responsibilities:

Developing pharmacy staff education materials, attending meetings, monitoring antibiotic appropriateness, answering DI questions, and completing various other projects assigned by my preceptor.

Rotation Description:

During this rotation, I was fortunate to experience a variety of hospital pharmacist responsibilities. I completed daily antibiotic appropriateness monitoring and assisted pharmacists in making warfarin and vancomycin dose adjustments, patient counseling, and reviewing fall reports. My other daily responsibilities included preparing medication orders, sterile IV compounding, and refilling medication storage. I also had the chance to attend multiple meetings including Patient Safety, IT, and Infectious Disease. Finally, I created an overview of melatonin for P&T Committee formulary consideration.

My Experience:

During this rotation, I saw first-hand how pharmacists and technicians are invaluable to the hospital setting. They are integral to the healthcare team in optimizing patient care by improving safety, minimizing drug expenditures, and providing education.
