LEAD - Organizational/Non-Profit Leadership

Module Objectives:

After participating in this module, participants will be able to:

1. Describe the difference between ad hoc committees, standing committees, and work groups, how they each should operate and how to determine which is most pertinent for any organizations.
2. List typical duties and responsibilities of a Board member for a non-profit organization and differentiate between these and committee roles.
3. Explain the Board member’s “Standards of Care” and what is meant by serving as a fiduciary for the organization.
4. Articulate the required state and federal filings for non-profits and the Board member’s role in each.
5. Outline the pertinent legal issues and required governing documents to which all non-profits must adhere.
6. Provide examples of ways to motivate, encourage, and engage volunteers.
7. Demonstrate how to interpret typical financial reports from a non-profit.
8. Review key concepts in the preparation of a budget for a non-profit

Additional Interactions:

1.  Contact and speak with a leader of your choice in your community to get various insights from that individual.  This can be someone if your local chamber or a charitable organization.  Ask them about their role as a volunteer, why they do it, what background helped, etc.  It will help you understand organizations outside of pharmacy and the importance of involvement in these.

2.  Reach out to at least one of our Board members, Foundation Board members, or PPCN Board members and ask them about their understanding of their fiduciary obligations as a Board meeting and their interpretation of the orientation and information PPA provides to them.  Their emails can all be found on the PPA website.


Activities and Related Experiences:

1. Attend the meetings of the PPA, Foundation, and PPCN at the Mid Year Conference (this will be spelled out in your Mid Year invitation.

2.  Get involved in a PPA Committee or Work group.  Contact Pat Epple, if you need assistance finding the right match.

3. Try to recruit one additional pharmacist as a PPA member.  Remember - there is strength and power in numbers!

Two HIstorical Commentaries - A Historical Overview of Philanthropy, Voluntary Associations, and Nonprofit Organizations in the United States - a Harvard Review article.  About 60 pages, nice overview of how associations emerged and grew and their differences and similarities.  Also/or Historical Perspectives - by same author, slightly different focus


FAQs About Associations - a short article on the ASAE website.  It will give you a new appreciation about the quantity of Associations and the whole non-profit world!  


The Perfect Board - by Calvin K. Clemons, CAE. CMP.  I love this book!  It is a short, easy read but discusses key elements of successful boards today!  A must read for any association executive but volunteers in key leadership positions especially will also benefit.  You can purchase it at his website which is linked or from retailers like Amazon and Barnes and Noble.  It sells for $16.95 - buy through AmazonSmiles and they will donate a small percentage to our Foundation if you register your account to the PPA Educational Foundation.

Websites to explore and save for reference:

Board Source - collection of books, resources, and training for non-profits. They have many great tools - although all come at a price. Don't feel you need to invest now, but keep this site in mind!

American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) - Much of the information is reserved content for members but you can search the site and find some interesting articles and resources. Please note there is also a PA Society for Association Excellence (PASAE) but its website contains almost exclusive member information and few general resources.


PA Association for Non-Profit Organizations (PANO)  - In Pennsylvania, this group administers The Standards for Excellence offers tools and resources to empower Community Benefit Organizations (nonprofits) to meet the highest standards of nonprofit governance, management and operations.


Guidestar Non-Profit Directory - GuideStar is the most complete source of information about U.S. charities and other nonprofit organizations there is. Search our database of more than 1.8 million IRS-recognized organizations to find a charity to support, benchmark your own nonprofit's performance, research the sector, and more.  Before you volunteer - check an organization out on Guidestar!


Learning To GIve - an organization dedicated to teaching the importance of philanthropy.


National Association of Non-Profit Organizations- Robert C. Harris, CAE - This website has lots of free resources to help non-profits.  It also has some great short reading and tools for volunteers to learn more about roles and responsibilities.


The Perfect Board - While this is a book noted about for reading, the author created a website with some free resources and updates.  Plus this is where you can buy the book in addition to other retailers like Amazon and Barnes and Noble.


Additionally, I certainly encourage you to explore any of the various national pharmacy websites and explore their structure, their Board, and volunteers.
