Substance Use Disorder: Identification and Referral Part II

Program Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:


1. Describe the current trends associated with the prevalence of substance use disorders.
2. Explain the neuroscience related to substance use disorders.
3. Discuss the choice argument vs. disease model of substance use disorders.
4. Compare and contrast substance use disorders with other chronic diseases.
5. Explore the role of stigma as a barrier to treatment.
6. Describe the mechanism of action for categories of commonly abused substances.
7. List the primary adverse effects for categories of commonly abused substances.
8. List the primary withdrawal symptoms for categories of commonly abused substances.
9. Utilize the PDMP and pre-screening questions to identify patients at risk for substance use disorders.
10. Apply appropriate screening instruments to further refine and define the level of risk for substance use
disorders.
11. Explore patient cases that illustrate the administration and interpretation of screening instruments for
substance use disorders.
12. Describe the various frameworks that can be employed in motivational interviewing approaches.
13. Employ tools such as the readiness ruler, decisional matrix, and reflection that can be utilized in motivational
interviewing.
14. Explore example cases that illustrate motivational interviewing and the warm hand-off process for patients
who may be suffering from a substance use disorder.
15. Participate as a health care provider in a mock screening and intervention for a patient at risk for a
substance use disorder.
16. Play the role of a patient in a mock screening and intervention for an individual at risk for a substance use
disorder.
17. Evaluate the effectiveness of a fellow peer in a mock screening and intervention for a patient at risk for a
substance use disorder utilizing a rubric.
18. Participate in a debriefing session for the mock screening and intervention exercise.
19. Identify educational resources and materials relative to substance use disorders that can be made available
for distribution at the practice setting.
20. Build a list of area resources and referrals relative to substance use disorders that can be made available for
distribution at the practice setting.
21. Identify a contact and referral list that can be accessed for a warm hand-off.
22. Design a protocol for the practice site that can be followed when encountering an individual at risk for a
substance use disorder.
23. Identify appropriate billing codes for substance use disorder treatment planning.
24. Discuss proper documentation and follow-up for substance use disorder treatment planning.
