The Pharmacist’s Role in Promoting Patient Safety in the Treatment of Diabetes


Insulin has been associated with more medication errors than any other drug class and hospitalization rates for hypoglycemia now exceed those for hyperglycemia. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in are on the front lines of the battle to improve medication safety among patients treated for diabetes. This program will use a case based approach to make participants aware of medication errors and patient safety issues that arise in the treatment of diabetes. Participants will explore strategies to identify and prevent errors related to insulin and other diabetes agents.

Overdose vs. Patients: The Dawn of Naloxone

Pennsylvania is in the midst of an opioid epidemic.  Ten Pennsylvanians die every day due to an opioid/heroin overdose.  With figures for 2016 expected to be worse than 2015, the state is turning to health care providers for help.  As pharmacy providers, we are equipped with the opportunity to dispense the lifesaving medication naloxone.  This program will provide an overview of the current state of the opioid epidemic in Pennsylvania and provide you with the tools needed to properly respond to an overdose scene and to provide top level patient education on the topic.

The Lehigh Valley Pain Management Alliance Experience

This presentation highlights the establishment of a community pharmacy-based pain management service -The Lehigh Valley Pain Management Alliance - a collaborative effort between the pain management practices of the region and the member pharmacies of the alliance. This relationship will assure that bona fide pain management patients will have a pharmacy dedicated to their treatment, that these medical practices will have a partner in the care of their patients, and that illicit distribution of dangerous drugs through mainstream medical channels will be eliminated by enhanced patient selection.
