Program Description

This session will discuss key clinical aspects of the Zika virus and the current epidemiological status of the virus across the world. Additionally, the session will guide pharmacists to make patient-focused recommendations for prevention and to provide general education for the public.


Program Objectives

1. Analyze the history, characteristics and sequelae of the Zika virus
2. Describe the current status of Zika virus in reference to public health guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and World Health Organization
3. Discuss methods to prevent acquisition of Zika virus
4. Identify opportunities for educating vulnerable patients on the Zika virus and other related travel health considerations



Jordan R Covvey, PharmD, PhD, BCPS, Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Administration, Duquesne University School of Pharmacy

Dr. Covvey earned her PharmD at the University of Kentucky, followed by completion of a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System in Richmond, VA. She subsequently passed her board certification in pharmacotherapy and was awarded a Fulbright Award to pursue her PhD studies at the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences in Glasgow, Scotland, with a focus in medicines utilization improvement. In her current role at Duquesne, she has teaching responsibilities for the professional program in public health/epidemiology, the American healthcare system and global health curricula, as well as in healthcare database techniques for graduate students. Her scholarship focus is in the use of electronic medical records and other health outcomes methodologies used to promote quality improvement in prescribing and medicines use.

CE Requirements

To receive CE credit for this home study, you will need to watch the entire video, complete an online survey evaluation, and pass a short quiz. Access to the survey and quiz will be automatically provided after you have watched the video. PPA must have your CPE Monitor ID and birthday on file to issue credit.
